I’ve needed to do a college post, so this is it. College is a paradox – it is both absolutely amazing and horrible at the same time. Let’s begin with the good things, hmmm?
First off, almost every day, I have an hour long lunch break at the very least. Its awesome how I can just go into the cafeteria, lazily lay my bag on a seat, take my time eating my lunch, and not rush through it. It doesn’t feel like the clock is on my back. Heck, most times, I have an extra half hour. I need to eat slower.
Now, I am usually not one to make friends so quickly, but well, in just one day me and this one guy, Steve, are pretty much Science buddies. Whoever is in Astronomy class/lab first makes room for the other. We didn’t even get into talking about what we like to do. It’s kind of awkward and awesome at the same time.
Steve is the type of guy you’d be surprised about. First off, he’s a science geek, but he looks like a stereotypical PC user. He’s big, with these bear of arms. His hair is a mixture of brown and blonde, and he has tattoos all over his left and right arm. That, and he has a pierced eyebrow. He doesn’t look like someone who would be into science, so I can’t help but chuckle whenever he goes on his wild crazes in class with me.
He’s into sports and psychology too, which doesn’t even make more sense. He looks too big to be athletic, and he seems too lazy at times for psychology. Ah well, moving on!
I have two awesome professors – Stephen Taylor and William Maecham. Taylor is my Compository Writing prof., while Maecham is my History prof. Taylor is the type of person you’d thought you met a long time ago. He just gets on your friendly side real quick with his crazy antics. Case in point: his clock was broken, so he told us whoever stole one from another classroom would get bonus points. I am determined to get at least part of those points.
Maecham, on the other hand, is the type of professor who you get into because he makes the subject matter interesting. He uses a lot of humor, but he’s more serious than not; he just finds a way to get you into the subject with a snap of his finger. The humor has a lot to do with it, perhaps, but I don’t know at this point. It’s too early to say.
Now, for the bad part.
My classes are split between two institutions – Greensboro and the main campus, Jamestown. My first two classes are at Greensboro, and the rest are at Jamestown. The Greensboro campus is a half hour commute from my house, so I have to wake up at 7 so I can be there by 8. Jamestown is another half hour drive, but I always have an hour to get there, so it’s no rush.
It just sucks that I have to wake up so early, and drive so early, just for Math and Spanish.
The first week has also been a living hell. First, the lost the keys to my car, so my Mom had to drive me, and then had to get my car towed to the Car Dealership so they could make another set of keys. Then I get in my first accident the day after!
I’ll talk more about that some other time.
Then, today, my car got towed because I was apparantley blocking traffic for some reason, although I didn’t see that when I was doing the parking.
In other news, my secret RP project is going slow and
steady, but Persona 3 is my gaming god at the moment. As Lazarus has stated,
“Any game where you have to shoot yourself in the head to cast spells is fucking awesome."
That man should be nominated for President.
Tomorrow is my real last day of school, exempting Graduation Practice.
In review, my week was pretty good. Yesterday, I got my driver's license. I bought Neverwinter Nights 2 (which showed that I need a new video card...since thats the reason it won't work), and the first three books of the War of the Spiderqueen series.
On the bad side, nothing really 'awesome' happened. Alot of good stuff, but no awesome stuff. I need to go hang out with my friends more. At least there's Kevin's graduation party that will be a guaranteed gathering of chaos.
Nothing really happened yesterday. I got practically nothing done in The Dragon's Wail, and I didn't even get my Geometry homework done because it made no sense whatsoever. I made some progress in Final Fantasy VI, making the three hour mark when I defeated the Phantom Train. I am beginning to see what Kevin meant when he said that it had the entourage feel, with all of the characters being given the spotlight, rather than just one single main character. I could under what the Cyan was going through when he saw the spirits of his loved ones pass into the afterlife...to an extent, at the very least.
In other news, I started to play Xenosaga again. I equipped my party with poison resistant anything, and I am finally giving those cursed Lizardmen the beating that they deserve!
I started playing Final Fantasy VI yesterday, although the exact reason is beyond me. Maybe it was because I was tired of spending all day working on The Dragon's Wail, or perhaps because I wanted to experience the famous entourage feel that FF 6 was so famous for. What I do know is that, despite its age, I'm loving this game. Its probably because of the whole retro feel.
In other news, my dad watched me watch the trailer for Lost Odyssey. He thought it was absolutely ridiculous, some of the over-the-top moves that Cain was pulling off. I suppose some people just never will appreciate cool stuff when they see it.
The weekend went well enough. I made some progress in The Dragon's Wail, which is always a good thing, with a few new areas and some additional scripts. In other news, I finnaly met the Michaela, Kevin's best lady friend (and at one time, possible girl friend, but that's another story all together), so that was always cool, I suppose. And speaking of Kevin, I finally, finnaly, managed to go over Kevin's house this weekend. Unfortunetley, after two months of waiting for this day, all we did was play videogames (although Okami was and still is a beautiful game to look at) and watch random scenes from Monthy Python.
I want to say really bad that I got some work done yesterday, but doing so would be making a fool out of myself. The most work I got done yesterday was downloading the entire Final Fantasy IV and VI soundtrack (not saying that I am regretting downloading them, mind you).
I have, however, gotten interested to Lost Odyssey . Its the first 'realistic setting' RPG by Mistwalker Studios, the RPG studio founded by the original creator of Final Fantasy (the first three titles, if I am correct), Hironobu Sakaguchi. I had gotten addicted to the trailer, which doesn’t include any actual plot elements, but I'd be damned if visuals of two armies clashing at each other, Cain (the main character) destroying a war machine on his own, and the sky splitting to allow a river of lava to flow down and burn the armies alive.
Some people have been complaining of how Lost Odyssey is a turn based RPG, rather than a Real Time RPG that some console RPGs have been showing. Well, is there anything really wrong with sticking to tradition a bit? Both have their merits, and both should be appreciated (although I tend to prefer TB RPGs over RT RPGs). I'll write a more detailed analysis later.
The Dragon's Wail did not go get through much. I spent most of the day trying to get this mask to work for the life of me. After working on it for two hours, searching on NW VAULT and the NWN forums, and not finding an answer to my problems, I just gave the character a hood head model.
After that, I noticed that it took half a minute to for me to import any file into the module_hak, not to mention the two minutes to save it each time. So, I decided that instead of putting all of my custom weapons, armor, tilesets, heads, and portraits into one hak, I will separate them into six for each category. Took me a half hour to round up all the haks off of NWVAULT, though, but now it takes me half a second for both saving the haks and importing files. Organization FTW!
In other Neverwinter Nights related news, I continued my game time of the cancelled premium module (but finished and released as a free module on NWVault) Darkness over Daggerford. I got the final 'Daggerford's gates are closed' quest done, so I was allowed to tour the countryside. I am very impressed with their custom map system, which is defiantly inspired by Baldur's Gate. Between being hunted by were wolves in a maze, helping a murdered hero cleanse his soul, and unraveling a conspiracy considering a cheese company (who would of known that a halfling would send assassins just to get rid of her cheese-y rivals?), Mathias (my character) got his (my) hands full.
